Factory made recycled paper

How it's made...

This is how most factories would recycle paper. We suggest you look at how to make paper at home first because the process is similar to making paper at home just in bigger quantities and more machines. You will see the similarities as you go along (we'll point them out). To get to the homemade paper page click here.

Step 1: The paper is put in a large vat of water (usually at 43°C). This helps take out the ink from the paper. The paper is turned into a gray mush called pulp in this step. *This step is like when when your squares of paper are put in hot water.

Step 2: Then the paper is soaked in a mixture of water and detergent. Then it is run through many screens. This how they make the paper white and get the rest of the ink out. * The screen part is like when you put the homemade paper on the wire mesh.

Step 3: A portion of the pulp is taken and pressed to make a small sample of paper. The sample is carefully inspected in the light by experts. This makes sure the paper is of good quality for selling.

Step 4: The rest of the pulp is pressed and made into sheets of paper. Once it dries, it's packaged and sent to the stores.* You don't have to package your homemade paper! :)

Did you know...

The reason paper from a factory is white is because usually they add bleach.
