Side Effects of Penicillin

Penicillin is among the least toxic of drugs (to humans). Just like many other antibiotics, there are possible negative effects. Some of the possible side effects of penicillin includes: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, colitis, and anorexia. At high doses though, penicillin can have a dangerous effect causing: seizures, platelet dysfunction, hemolytic anemia, encephalitis, and nephritis. Another result of penicillin use is the possibility of resistance to it. If penicillin (just like any other antibiotic) is taken too often, or not taken according to directions, your body may build up a resistance to it. The bacteria that was not killed off by the penicillin mutates, causing it to remain unaffected by the antibiotic.
