Controlling Variables

  1. High school males are asked to volunteer to participate in the study.
  2. The experiment will take place in a suitable school facility. An indoor facility means:

A) There will be no wind.

B) The temperature is constant.

C) The area is well lit, no shadows.

D) The floor is even and level.

  1. There will be only one ball that the participants will throw at the target.
  2. Throwing will be randomized by putting the distances in a hat and will be pulled out one at a time so the participant will be at a different distance each time.
  3. Before the throwing takes place there will be a warm up, so muscles won’t be cold when throwing. This will ensure that there are no injuries.
  4. There will be instructions given to the participants, stating the rules of the throw. The participant will be allowed one step into the throw, as long as the front foot does not cross the line.
  5. The target will be mounted on the wall. The target will be the same each time the ball is thrown and will not be moving.
  6. All those weight training will be asked to complete a training log recording exercises they did, number of sets and repetitions, and the days the training occurred.

Critical Evaluation of Risk

Weight Training

  1. The subjects selected are already weight training as part of a routine; therefore they already accept   the risks involved. No additional training due to weight lifting occurs by participating in this project.
  2. Weight lifters have been counseled to stretch and warm-up prior to weight training sessions.
  3. The weight training facility is under constant supervision by a teacher.
  4. A release form was signed prior to getting a weight room pass.

Throwing

  1. The practice is for accuracy, not strength; therefore the ball will not be thrown as hard as the subject can throw
  2. Stretching and warm-up will be done prior to practice.

Accuracy Testing

  1. Testing for throwing accuracy does not require the ball to be thrown hard.
  2. Stretching and warm-up will be done prior to practice.
