What Is Cancer?
Cancer cells are created as cells in a part of the body grow
out of control. Although there are various types of cancer,
all types develop through the uncontrollable growth of
abnormal cells.
In the body, normal cells go through a cycle (grow, divide,
then die) in a repetitive fashion. In the early stages of
growth in a human, cells divide at a fast rate, until the
person becomes an adult, at which time the cells divide only
to replace worn-out cells or dead ones.
Since the abnormal cancer cells divide at an uncontrollable
rate, they outlive normal cells in the body, and instead
of dying, they continue to divide and form new abnormal cells.
Cancer cells are also capable to travel to other places
of the body, where they start growing and dividing once more.
This process is called metastasis, and it occurs when cancer
cells get into the bloodstream or lymph vessels of the body.
Cancer cells come to being when there is damage to someone’s
DNA. Usually when the DNA coding is damaged, the body is
able to fix it, but in the case of cancer cells, the body
does not repair the damaged DNA, and cancer cells form. The
damage to the DNA can be easily caused by the exposure to
something in the environment, such as smoking. These damaged
DNA can be inherited, and thus allowing people to inherit
cancer.
When cancer cells multiply, they usually form tumors. However,
there are types of cancer, such as leukemia, do not form
tumors, as it travels around the body in the blood system.
In the body, not all tumors are cancerous. Benign (noncancerous)
tumors do not spread to other parts of the body, and are
usually not life-threatening.
The various types of cancer can behave in different ways.
For example, different cancers grow at different rates, and
respond to treatment differently. Thus, different types of
cancer require different types of treatment.
In today’s world, cancer is one of the leading causes of
death. Right now, there are millions of people who are living
with cancer, or have had cancer in the past. There are high
risks of developing cancer, but this can be reduced by changing
a person’s lifestyles, such as quiting smoking, or eating
a better diet. If cancer is diagnosed, the sooner treatment
begins, there are high chances of living for many more years.
