There is this classic old rumor, that should you have a bolt that is rusted in place, you simply need to submerge it in coke for several hours, and the bolt will undo! So we gave it a try. After searching around my dad's workshop for half an hour we finally got our grubby hands on a rusted bolt... which made our hands even more grubby. Then, we found a glass test tube/container, filled it with coke, and placed the bolt inside the container. Then we left it to sit for two and a half hours. Three hours later, we took out the bolt, rinsed it under water, and unscrewed it with ease. Useful no? WHY The acid in the coke ate at the rust that covered the bolt and nut, making the nut loosen from the bolt. Then, the carbonated water LIFTED the rust to the top of the container. When returned we found little bits of rust, floating at the top. |
