Who Knew Physics was this Fun???
The first known rollercoaster was invented sometime in the late 1600's. The first rollercoasters were pieces of ice covered in straw used to slide down hills. These evolved into benches with wheels that could be used year round. Riders sat sideways on these benches and slid down a track.
The first amusement park in North America opened in 1875 on Coney Island in New York. 'Modern' roller coasters were fashioned on wood tracks, which later gave way to steel tracks and cars. Traditionally, riders sat in cars, but new designs in roller coasters have riders standing, hanging, or going backwards.
