Around the world, towers are built to provide the most space to work and live. Towers are made to put the greatest number of people on a piece of land. The plans for the support of the structure must include the following factors: wind, foundation, shape; weight of people, furniture and the tower itself. This project concentrated on the weight that can be added and removed from a structure. The point of this project is to find out what shape, square or octagon, can hold the most weight. My hypothesis is that the octagon-shaped tower will be much stronger because it has more sides and that might help the tower be stronger. Two towers, a square and an octagon, were contructed with plastic straws. Each tower had the same area and same height. The results showed that my hypothesis is right. The octagon-shaped tower supported 75% more weight than the square tower. In addition, the octagon tower had one third the damage than the square tower. The results show that the octagon tower supported 3.5 pounds while the square tower only supported 2 pounds. In conclusion, the an octagon-shaped tower, can hold more weight than the square-shaped tower. |
