Natural Gas

Natural Gas is made from dead, decomposed plankton. Plankton are tiny plant organisms that live under the water. The bodies of the dead plant matter build up on the bottom of the ocean and are covered with layers and layers of sediment over time. After millions of years of heat and pressure from layers of rock building on top of the decomposed matter, the organic material became the fossil fuel, natural gas.

Natural gas is mainly made up of methane and hydrocarbons. Natural gas sometimes will seep up through cracks in the rock along with petroleum, and it will gather to become an underground reservoir. Natural gas, being in gas form, has a lower viscosity than petroleum and will settle on top of it. Natural Gas can also be found in the cracks and crevices of beds of coal.
