Hydroelectric Power

Hydroelectric power is electricity generated from the power of falling water. The motion of the water particles moving downwards by the force of gravity has kinetic energy. This kinetic energy can be converted into mechanical energy, which is converted into electrical energy. To harness this power, dams in the water are built. The amount of energy the water can generate depends on the amount of water and the distance it is falling. The water goes through pipes where it eventually turns a turbine and makes mechanical energy that turns an electrical generator. This turns the mechanical energy into electricity. Unfortunately, hydro-electric energy can cause serious environmental problems such as loss of animal and plant habitat and altering bodies of water.
