Things We Need To Do To
Develop the Hydrogen
Economy
There are many things that still need to be done to allow hydrogen cars to
become popular.
The Top Five Things To Do To Make Hydrogen More Economical
-
Produce
a standardized hydrogen fuel tank
-
Encourage
the production of hydrogen vehicles
-
Develop
hydrogen fuelling stations
-
Produce
more hydrogen
-
Get
the public interested
First we need to increase
the size of the fuel tank. Why would a person buy a car that can only travel
for around 250 miles (400 km) a tank? A more reasonable goal is at least a
range of 400 miles (640 km), closer to what people have now. If a
standardized hydrogen tank is developed and used with an internal combustion
engine, the transition to hydrogen vehicles will be easier. We believe the
standardization of the tank is a solvable issue. Second, there will
have to be an increase in the production of hydrogen cars. The cars should
be attractive,
affordable
and available. Another thing that needs to be done is to build hydrogen
fuelling stations. Fossil fuel
stations will have to be
converted to hydrogen. Governments
will need to help fund hydrogen fuelling stations because oil companies have nothing to gain by
offering an alternative to fossil fuel. In order to fill the stations we
will have to make more hydrogen. New technology to fuel the separation of
hydrogen compounds may need to be used to reduce the amount of energy
consumed in making hydrogen. In order for that to happen, research will have
to be subsidized, perhaps from current fuel taxes. And lastly, the public's
interest will have to be sparked. Change is difficult and people will resist
it. The general population will need to be convinced that they should buy
hydrogen cars. The government of Canada has committed
to meeting the Kyoto Protocol. The non-emission hydrogen car could be an
important step in reaching the government's goals. The government should focus on helping
to fund these key points because the hydrogen
car is the future.
