Project Info

Grade Grouping - Grade 10

Team Size - 1

Subject Area - Biology

Project Type - Experimental

Project Level - Standard

Project Format - Traditional

Summary - I used pea flour to control stored grain pests such as the rice weevil and the red flour beetle.  In an attempt to determine the active ingredient which kills grain pests in the pea, I also tested the cotyledon and testa flours of the pea.

Software Tools - Microsoft FrontPage, Microsoft Photo Editor, Adobe Acrobat, and Swish.

Hardware Tools - Web cam, Digital Camera

Source of Idea - One day while reading the Western Producer, I discovered an article which interested me.  This article briefly explained the experimental use of pea flour on stored grain pests.  I have always had a keen interest in biotechnology since I do live and work on a farm.  One other aspect which influenced me to pursue a project in this area was the fact that both my father and grandfather are involved in the industry of grain farming.  In the past we have been forced to spend thousands of dollars on  harmful chemicals to protect and repel pests from our stored grain.  I thought it would be beneficial to both our farm and as well as farms across North America and the world to possibly research efficient methods of controlling stored grain pests.

Special Skills - JavaScript and Java Applets
