As predicted, the treated human hair had more effective adsorption than dyed human hair. The average percentage of oil adsorbed to untreated human hair was 96.7% of the oil and dyed human hair was adsorbed by 92.2% of the oil. Out of three trials that we did on untreated human hair, they all have same results; 14.5mL of oil adsorbed to 5g of hair out of 15mL. However, the results for dyed human hair varied a little: 14mL of oil were adsorbed on trial 1, 13.5mL adsorbed on trial 2, and 14mL adsorbed on trial 3. The untreated human hair was adsorbed more by oil than the dyed human hair because the chemicals that were used on dyed human hair prevented the oil from adsorbing to its full extent.
Experiment B
The dog fur had a more effective absorption than the cat fur. The average percentage of oil adsorbed for the dog fur was 96.5% of the oil and the cat fur was 93.1% of the oil. Out of the trials that we did on dog fur, these were the results; 14.4 mL, 14.7 mL, and 14.4mL of oil adsorbed to 5g of hair out of 15mL. However, the results for cat fur adsorbed less: 13.75mL adsorbed on trial 1, 14.4mL adsorbed on trial 2, and 13.75mL adsorbed on trial 3. The dog fur was adsorbed more oil than the cat fur because the dog fur had thicker hair than the cat fur. The spaces between the dog hair were bigger and they held the oil in much better than the cat fur which did not have as much space as the dog fur.
Experiment C
The results of this experiment were unexpected. The containers that had temperature of –6 C had the lowest average percentage of oil adsorbed to hair, which was 73.3%. Unexpectedly, both –1 C and 14 C had same average percentage of oil adsorbed which were 91.3%. In trials of the –6 C, 10mL, then 11.5mL and 11.5mL again of oil were adsorbed. In the trials of the –1 C, 13mL, than 14mL and 14mL again of oil were adsorbed. The trials of the 14 C, 14.5mL, then 13.5mL, and 13mL of oil were adsorbed. The results proved the hair does not get adsorbed by oil as much when the surroundings are frozen than when the surroundings are warm.
