Summary:

Scientific knowledge has skyrocketed in recent years; scientists can now modify the DNA in organisms. Scientists say they are doing it to try and reduce world hunger and disease. What side effects will genetic modification cause? What does the average person think of genetic modification? What do they know about it? I decided to try and find the answers to these questions. In an attempt to find the answers to the last two questions, I created a questionnaire. I distributed the questionnaire to various people and e-mailed some out as well. The results were then tabulated and analysed. Additional comments and information was compiled from industry, government, scientists and other interested groups. Articles were also collected from various news sources.

To understand more fully the concept of biotechnology and genetically modified organisms I created the section on the making of a GMO and the experiment, which demonstrates the process of extracting DNA. In case you are having problems understanding some concepts I created the definitions page to clarify some of the scientific terminology.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my web site and I hope that I have been able to enlighten you on this fascinating yet controversial subject of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Source of the idea for the project:
