Making genetically altered plants and animals are two very different processes.
The following illustrations show how both genetically modified plants and animals are created.

This animal example is called an Enviropig. The phytase enzyme injected into the fertilized egg allows the piglet(s) born from the egg to digest phosphorus in their normal feed, thereby avoiding the need for costly phosphorus feed supplements, and the level of enviromentally hazardous phosphorus in their manure is greatly reduced.
